Salzburg

The city of Salzburg – and especially its historic city centre – is in fact one of the loveliest places in Europe, winning international acclaim in 1997 when it was designated a world heritage site by UNESCO. Salzburg, the capital of the province of the same name, lies on the northern slopes of the Alps, almost at the centre of Austria. Its world-wide reputation is due primarily to its superb architecture and its incomparable natural setting. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg in 1756. Salzburg's stature as a centre of learning is enhanced by the designation of the "Mozarteum" a Music University and by the reconstitution in 1962 of the University that was founded in 1622. Salzburg is also the home of the world-famous Summer Music Festival, founded in 1920.
